One such aspect is foot placement, and it's something that can be adjusted while you're riding a wave. Unless they are deep in the barrel, advanced surfers almost never surf in a straight line. Either they are performing a dramatic move, or they are generating the necessary speed for one. That speed comes from a regular series of carves that accelerate them down the line. It is called rail-to-rail surfing, and if you want to generate the speed and momentum necessary to perform spectacular roundhouses, snaps off the lip and even aerials, it is a must-have in your repertoire.

There are roughly three key steps to accomplishing an advanced surfing goal. First, you want to honestly assess your own skill level. Second, set one realistic goal for yourself. This takes focus, and the discipline to resist the urge to try to master every aspect of surfing at once. Third, don't give up or switch to a new goal, just because you're not making immediate gains.
