Best Beaches for Beginners in San Diego

It can be intimidating to start a new sport or hobby and surfing is no exception. That’s not to say that nerves should keep anyone from learning and improving their surfing skills, but rather there are things that you can do to make yourself more comfortable while you’re surfing. A helpful thing to do to make yourself more comfortable in your surroundings is to find spots where you like to surf and where you feel like you can make mistakes while you are learning. Luckily, there are some great beaches in San Diego that are perfect for beginners.

Coronado

Coronado Beach is a great place for beginners to learn to surf on white water. You can pick any sport down the shore (that is open to the public ) to hop in the water to practice your skills. Coronado is known for its small waves. This means that it is a pretty safe place to learn close to the shore. The small waves also mean that serious surfers often stay away from this beach so you won’t have to worry about getting in anyone’s way while you’re learning the tricks of the trade.

Mission Beach

Mission Beach can be a great place to learn to surf but you have to find the right spot along the shore here. This is because some of the spots in mission beach are well known breaks that serious surfers flock to. You can still find good waves at the other spots in Mission Beach. In front and north of Belmont Park you can find breaks that are better for beginners. These spots are great for people who want to paddle to the outside but are still learning to surf.

Pacific Beach

Pacific Beach has chill vibes with surfers who are at all different levels. You can find people shredding here, but can also be surrounded by other people learning by our surf school! This is a great beach to go to if you want to practice in the white water or if you’re feeling comfortable enough to paddle to the outside. Just make sure you watch out for surfers going down the line and try your best not to get in another’s way!

La Jolla Shores

La Jolla Shores is a great beach to go to because it’s spacious enough that you can find a spot to practice your skills. This is a popular beach so you have to watch out for people around you and surfers that may be more advanced but you’re sure to be able to find a good spot for practice. This beach is great for those who would like to improve on the outside.

It’s always a great time to learn to surf! If you’ve been feeling scared of getting in the water, hopefully these spots will make the learning process a little more comfortable. Even though these are very beginner friendly areas to surf, make sure that while you’re practicing your skills you’re also improving your surf etiquette knowledge so the water is a fun place for everyone!
